may 2016 / wanted design students workshop
we were tasked to create an object under the theme of “playtime.” given the choice of two out of three materials, our group selected wood and glass. the playfulness is in the unexpectedness of the material for the form (glass used for seating) but more importantly in the interaction of the two materials. evidence of their collision is left on the wood in the form of charring and in the altered form of the glass. my contribution as team coordinator included liaison with the program mentor, design development, fabrication, and final presentation development.
the process of creating the glass and the resulting forms recall aspects of childhood such as inflatable pool toys or blowing bubbles with gum or soap.
our process began in a playful way, using play-doh to test forms quickly and intuitively. we crafted the legs of the stool and the table top, and the glass was blown by a craftsman as we watched.
summer 2014
designed and built after an intensive danish design history course and a study tour through three scandinavian countries.
the design was informed by studies of the body, occurrences of lounge like settings in nature, and the inherent limitations of tubular steel.
